“Whereby, the late Chirwa Mambilima rendered outstanding services to the nation. She was the first female Chief Justice, and she contributed immensely to the legal fraternity and the development of justice systems in Zambia and beyond. The late Ireen Mambilima graduated from the University of Zambia with a Bachelor of Law Degree in 1976. She was appointed State Advocate and admitted to the Zambian Bar in 1977. Between 1981 and 1984 she was legal advisor to the Government on various bilateral agreements with other countries including joint permanent Commission in Zambia and abroad. Countries involved include Zimbabwe, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, United States of America, Belgium and China among others. During the same period, she was legal advisor to the Government loan negotiating teams on various occasions at the World Bank in Washington D.C. Whereby, she held several positions as follows: Chief Justice of the Republic of Zambia; Supreme Court Judge; Chairperson Emeritus Electoral Commission of Zambia; Chairperson of the Editorial Board Council for Law Reporting; Supreme Court Judge (session) of the Supreme Court of Gambia; Chairperson for the Council of Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education (ZIALE); Vice President Zambia Association of Women Judges; Board Member for Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute, Halifax, Canada and Coordinator for Jurisprudence of Equality Programme in the Zambia Judiciary. Her commitment to the justice system deserve special commendation.”
