“He was honoured for introducing early politics and the freedom struggle in the Zambezi Valley in Gwembe District. He was a close friend of ANC’s leader, Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula. Later, he was introduced to Kenneth Kaunda leader of UNIP by Solomon Kalulu, a senior member of UNIP. Because of his association with the freedom struggle, the Rhodesian forces targeted him and planted a landmine on his Banana farm which killed his elder brother’s two workers. Before his death on 11 July 2012 in Chirundu at the age of 89 years, he served as Councillor, Trustee and Chairman of the Gwembe District Council and implemented several projects in Chirundu; a road network, a hospital, a banana farm and a farm training centre. He followed the footsteps of his grandfather, Demetrius Vlahakis, who had come to Zambia from Crete Island off Greece main land and was a professional hunter in Chirundu. Demetrius had married four local African women with whom he had 27 children. The majority of his children bear the name of Vlahakis.”
