“He received his honour because of providing humanitarian assistance to hundreds of stranded villagers at Lundazi Boma in Eastern Province who were fleeing the Lumpa uprising of Mrs Mulenga Lenshina of Chinsali when he was a priest at St. Anne’s Mission in Chipata. Members of the newly-formed Lumpa Church in Chinsali and Lundazi clashed with a battalion of the Northern Rhodesia Regiment sent to the two areas in 1963 by the Prime Minister, Mr. Kenneth Kaunda of the coalition government of ANC and UNIP to quell the Lumpa uprising. Many people died in Lundazi and Chinsali in the skirmishes that ensued. Born on 24th May, 1925, the honoured priest later returned to his home country, France.”
