“He joined politics in 1948. During the struggle for independence he fought relentlessly side by side with older men and women. Although he worked under very dangerous conditions he did not give up. His aim was to work towards a definite goal i.e to achieve independence. After independence Mr. Chitongo went and settled in his village at Mulilabantu, Chief Mukwikile. The village had no access road to link it with the Great North Road. Through his initiative he organised the local people and were able to construct a 14.4 kilometre road on self help basis which now serves as a link between the village and the Great North Road. He also organised people in agriculture and as Chairman of the Village Productivity Committee encouraged self reliance.”
