“She was wife of Zambia’s first President Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda. She was a freedom fighter together with her husband during the liberation struggle in Northern Rhodesia. She was a pillar and strong supporter of UNIP and her husband’s resolve to gain independence for Zambia especially when Dr. Kaunda was jailed for one year by the colonial government for political reasons in Salisbury (Harare). She resolutely remained alone and focused. Was determined and forged ahead with life. She was cutting down trees and burning them into charcoal to sell to the public to earn income to sustain her family. She became First Lady at independence.”
